I’ve already posted about how much I was looking forward to this month; however, since the Cubs failed in finest Cubs form, my latest Ode to October will take a different tone. As many of you are no doubt aware (through my constant reminders), October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There
are many different risk factors that may make one more likely to develop breast cancer; there are measures you can take to help prevent it; but breast cancer can affect anyone, of all ages. Genetics can take over. You can live the healthiest life possible and it can still find you. But research has come a long way. Let’s take some time to think of those who have battled, are battling, or lost the battle with breast cancer. And let’s think of how we can make a difference…
You can do your part with the smallest of purchases. Yoplait yogurt, M&Ms, Orbit gum; they all have ‘pink’ options; when you purchase these items, the companies donate a portion of the proceeds to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This month when you are shopping, look for the pink ribbon displays in the stores and consider the pink M&Ms instead of the Halloween colors. If you purchase Yoplait yogurt, save the pink lids and send them in. Yoplait will donate 10 cents for every yogurt lid. If you would like to avoid the trouble, put the lids in a ziplock and put them in my mail folder at Boyd and I will send them in with mine.
The easiest way to contribute is to donate. The American Cancer Society’s fall event is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. For this event, individual participants set up a donation page. Find an event near you and sign up to participate and collect donations. Komen for the Cure takes general donations online as well.
Thank you again to everyone who donated at Oktoberfest. We raised $225 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. I really appreciate everyone opening their wallets despite the current financial situation. It really means a lot. Research, awareness, and early detection are the keys to eliminating breast cancer for good.
Awesome!
See, I usually hate the “pink merchandising” because I think it’s inefficient. If you want to give, give to Komen or ACS directly, without the middleman. It’s a crafty marketing ploy that does a wee bit of good.
That said, I am the proud owner of a new pink BreastCancerBrita. I am drawn to pink like a hummingbird to… pink!
True, but if you’re going to the store to buy Cheerios or Mint Milanos (not that I speak from experience …) and there is a pink version, VOILA! You’re getting what you wanted anyway AND helping keep boobs cancer-free. Everybody wins.
Exactly. And while many will make direct donations, the Pink options get money from those who may not have taken the time to send a donation. And I can never pass up Pink M&Ms. Or even the Pink raisin bran; totally bought that on Sunday.
